Garie Sim's 101 Polymer Clay Information

Polymer clay is nontoxic, man-made non- toxic modeling clay material that work and feel like ceramic clay, it would not dry out when exposed to the air. The clay can be bake in a regular or toaster oven at a temperature of 270º F / 130º C as compared to ceramic clay which are fired in a kiln at 1500º F. Once baked polymer clay can be sand, carve, drill, buff and rebake eg.(when required to replace or duplicate broken parts or features to your clay project).

The clay is PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic. Similar plastics are frequently used in today's plumbing and water piping. Tiny grains of PVC are mixed with plasticizers and pigments. With the new formulation the Phthalates are removed from the polymer clay. When the clay is baked at the proper temperature, varying from 230 to 270 º F (110º C to 130º C) depending upon the make and color), chemical changes occur and the particles fuse into a solid mass without shrinking. If heated again, the clay will soften slightly but not melt (technically it is similar to "thermosetting" plastics, but still has some characteristics of "thermoplastics"). Like many other plastics, if heated too hot 350º F to 390º F (180º C to 200º C) it will darken, give off noxious fumes and possibly catch fire. Polymer clay are available in more than hundreds of color. The different types and colors of the clay can be intermix. The colors may darken slightly when baked at higher temperature.

Liquid polymer clays are now available under Fimo Decorative Liquid Gel, Kato Liquid and Liquid Sculpey. Todate, there are even more types of polymer clay Sculpey has improved its formula for Sculpey 3, UltraLight clay that float on water, BakShop a friendly clay for kids, Pluffy its a fluffy clay for children. Another new product Pardo Jewellery Clay from Germany.

With such a wide varieties of clay, there are many option for artists, crafters and kids using it. Polymer clay can combined with other materials and accessories to enrich your creation/project. Modeling with polymer clay can be time-consuming, but it is your passport to a rich and imaginative world of shapes, textures and colors. You will be a happy and less stressful person and it will help children to develop their fine motor skills and improve hand eye coordination, motivate, encourage interaction, and turn the conceptual design into reality. Creative play with clay build the confident in the kids. It is the most versatile clay art medium, for the professional artists and crafters.

Polymer clay works well with surfaces like paper, aluminum foils, metal, glass, ceramic, marble, granite, do not work well with plastic and lacquer finish wood surface. You can paint your polymer clay model or creation with acrylic water based paints. Varnishing your clay creation with water based glaze (matt or shine) will improve the clay model and also removed some of your finger prints. When gluing polymer clays, used super glue gel or super glue. Beside super glue you can also use plastic cement, silicon glue, epoxy glue and hot melt glue gun.

Adding to the above, you don't need to use all the various brands of polymer clay, just concentrate on your creative skills, it is important to understand and know your clay medium that you are using, just get a good quality polymer clay. Garie Sim's Polymer Clay Tests And Experiments

*Super Elasticlay is very heat reative, if your hands are too warm it will get a little bit sticky, set the clay aside and work on another piece of clay.

*A good method for creating polymer clay figurines or art objects bigger than 4 - 8 inches, hollow out your creations, build them and bake them in parts, fill the hollow spaces with tissue, paper, box, polyform or poly ball.

*Putting the bigger creation to bake in the oven can be a problem, cover the object with aluminum foils, to prevent over baking from the bottom, use a ceramic tile under it. Baking with bigger object will have to monitor visually, starting with 20 minutes, if it is still not well done set another 15 or 30 minutes. Avoid over baking and check oven temperature with a oven thermometer. Over baking the clay at 350º F to 390º F (180º C to 200º C) will create fumes, avoid inhaling the fumes, always use well ventilated spaces.

*To remove finger print on clay used water on finger to rub and smoothen the polymer clay surface.

*"
Sculpey Baking Temperature, Bake at 270° F (130° C) for 15 minutes per 1/4 in  (6 mm) thickness.  DO NOT MICROWAVE. Baking should be completed by an adult. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME." By Polyform

Although the recommended temperature is at 270°F (130°C) for 15 minutes per 1/4 in  (6 mm) thickness, my recommendation is from 280º F to 300 º F ( 140º C to 150º C) for 30 minutes, the reason, oven fluctuates within 280º F to 300 º F ( 140º C to 150º C)
The safest baking temperature is at 270º F (130º C) for 30 minutes, at this temperature even you bake for an hour the polymer clay will cured even better.

*New Fimo Baking Temperature, Bake at 230º F (110º C) for 30 minutes
My recommendation for baking Fimo is 270º F (130º C) for 30 minutes

*If you want to fully cure the polymer clay project, after baking for 40 minute at 280º F (140º C), switch off the oven, leave the clay project in the oven for 2.0 hours in the convection oven

About Microwaving Polymer Clay

Microwaving polymer clay is possible, especially the clay recommended baking for Fimo temperature is bake at 230º F (110º C) for 30 minutes. To microwave the polymer clay, you need to submerge the small clay project in a microwavable container for 15 minutes between interval, always have to make sure that there is water above your clay project.

About Safety And Toxic Of Polymer Clay

What types of pigments are used to color the clays? Are they toxic?

We use Non-Toxic pigments and mica pigments. None of our pigments contain any heavy metals or chemicals of concern. In our Premo! product line, our clay colors such as "cadmium red hue," "cobalt blue hue" and the like mimic the colors of the heavy metal based pigments but are non-toxic and safe. Our colors are named after the artist's paint colors, but none contain possible toxic substances such as cadmium, zinc or titanium.

Some of the oven-bake clays "bleed" color on your hands. This is due to the amount of pigment needed to make the deep, rich, luxurious colors. Work from light colors to dark colors. Clean hands when shifting to a lighter color, and clean the rollers of your pasta machine to avoid introducing any deep colors into the lighter colors.
