20 MINUTES TEST: MICROWAVING TO ALL TYPES OF POLYMER CLAY

Sculpey III, Premo, Super Sculpey, Sculpey Granitex, Super Elasticlay, SuperFlex, Sculpey Eraser Clay, Cernit No. 1, Fimo Classic, Fimo Classic, Du-Kit, Ezi-Flexi, Ezi-Glowi And Ezi-Poly.

Beads and Strips

The twenty minutes of microwaving to all types of polymer clay, test is to show result of curing the beads and strips in the superheated water. Twenty minutes of microwaving, is the extreme test and I don't think anyone have taken it to this level, especially, with so many types of clay. The test is done in a control home environment, by using microwaveable vessels or containers. All the clay are well known brands except the new formulation of the Ezi Clay, although they are available it is still, under going test before marketing them widely.

Setting the microwave oven

Preheated water with the submerged clay beads

Notice the water level after 20 min.

Preheated water with the submerged clay strips

Notice the water level after 20min. and the mooning with the Du-kit clay

The chart shows the condition of the clay after 20 min. in the microwave oven,
two of the clay have got mooning problem.

Two of the clay have got mooning problem on the beads and the strips
are Fimo Soft and Du-kit .

Results After The 20 minutes Process

Sculpey III

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is hard and rigid, bending it snap the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Sculpey Premo

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is very flexible, surface is semi gloss finish and bending it doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Super Sculpey

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, color changed from dark to light beige also for the strip, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is hard and rigid, bending it snap the clay, surface is matt finish, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Sculpey Granitex

After 20 min. the bead is very hard when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is hard, bend slightly before breaking, surface is matt finish, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Super Elasticlay

After 20 min. the bead is soft when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead bounced a little. The strip is very flexible, surface is matt finish and bending it into a circle doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

SuperFlex

After 20 min. the bead is semi soft when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is very flexible, surface is matt finish and bending it into a circle, doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Sculpey Eraser Clay

After 20 min. the bead is softer than SuperFlex, when pressed against the table, slight change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is very flexible, surface is matt finish and bending it into a circle, doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Cernit No. 1

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, slight change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip bend slightly before breaking, surface is matt finish, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Fimo Classic

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is more flexible than Cernit, before breaking, surface is matt finish, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Fimo Soft

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, slight change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is rigid bending it break, surface is matt finish, lots of mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Du-Kit

After 20 min. the bead is hard when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is flexible like Fimo Classic, bend slightly before breaking, surface is a little semi gloss finish, lots mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Ezi Flexi

After 20 min. the bead is very soft , softer than SuperFlex when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead but bounced. The strip is very flexible, surface is matt finish, can bend into a circle doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Ezi Glowi

After 20 min. the bead is soft , similar softness to Eraser Clay, when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead but bounced slightly. The strip is very flexible, surface is matt finish, can bend into a circle doesn't break the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Ezi poly

After 20 min. the bead is hard, when pressed against the table, no change in color, impact test 5 times against concrete floor at 1.6 m height, doesn't split the bead. The strip is flexible like Fimo Classic, surface is matt finish, bend before breaking the clay, no mooning or plaguing problem for both.

Note: Some of the clay strips are warp, it is due to the chemical changes of the clay during the curing stage, from soft to hard, the boiling water current warped the strips.

12.12.07 A Microwave experience with Polymer clay - Chapter I
After my poor and lousy experience with polymer clay, I discovered last week that one can bake polymer clay in microwave, but of course not on dry - but covered with water, in a special microwave container. Garie Sim did a remarkable experience she shared with us in the following links and connected links:
