Microwaving and Baking Sculpey Premo
Premo polymer clay is formulated to be what we feel is the strongest and most durable polymer clay around. Premo! Sculpey is not brittle after baking. In thicker areas it is hard and rigid and in delicate areas "flexes" to reduce the risk of breakage. Whether you're a sculptor or craftsperson, beginner or professional we think you will love the benefits of Premo Sculpey. Standard curing instruction: Premo! Sculpey should be cured at 275 degrees F (130 C) in a preheated oven for 30 minutes per quarter inch of thickness.
For my test, the clay is rolled to 1.0 mm thk. with a pasta machine, cut two pieces of 15mm Width X 35mm Length, Premo strips. Preheat the microwave container filled with water in the microwave oven for 3 to 5 min.(highest setting) container size: 12cm diameter X 7cm height, water level, set to 5cm level. Preheat the convection oven for 5 to 10 min. at 130ºC. Put Premo strip into the preheated container with water and set the microwaving process to 10 min. Put another strip into the preheated convection oven set the baking time to 10 min. After microwaving, pour away the hot water in the container and removed the Premo strip. Removed the other strip in the convection oven after 10 min. Let both strips cool before the comparison test. Below are the documented result.
Testing with Ultramarine blue premo polymer clay, notice the color different the convection baked clay is slightly darker than the microwaved clay. Flexiblity test, convection baked Premo strip is flexible.
Flexiblity test, microwaved Premo strip is also flexible.
Both sample strips are flexible, the only differences is the color, convection baked strip is slightly darker than the microwaved strip.
The result shows that you can cured the premo clay by microwaving in a proper container filled with WATER and this is supported with the flexiblity test for both strips using two different type of oven. Caution: Do not Microwave any Polymer clay Directly in the oven, always cured the clay in a microwave safe container filled with water. Direct microwaving will burned the clay within 2 min and the process will create fumes which is not healthy for the environment.
In conclusion, microwaving process is limited to small miniatures or beads as you have to put your clay works in a container with limited space filled with water.
